Best Public Tennis Courts in Sydney (Free and Paid)

A working guide to the best public tennis courts in Sydney, from free council courts to pay-by-the-hour facilities. Where to play, what it costs, and which courts are worth the trek.

By Two brothers in Melbourne, co-founder of RallyHub.

Sydney has hundreds of tennis courts available to the public, ranging from free council courts in suburban parks to pay-by-the-hour facilities with floodlights and synthetic surfaces. This is a working guide to the best of them, organised by region, with a clear note on which ones are worth the trek and which are free.

All info checked against council websites and our own visits as of mid 2026. Prices and booking systems do change, so verify before driving across town.

Eastern suburbs

Heffron Park Tennis Centre (Maroubra)

Twelve courts, all hard court, full floodlights. Bookable online via the centre's portal. Around $25 to $35 per hour. Coaches on site if you want a lesson. The default eastern Sydney tennis facility for serious recreational play.

Trumper Park (Paddington)

Two synthetic grass courts in a beautiful park location. Free to use during daylight hours, no booking required, first-come first-served. Often busy at weekends. Best for a casual hit if you live in the inner east.

Centennial Park Tennis

Eight hard courts inside Centennial Park. Bookable via the park's tennis administrator. Around $30 per hour. Walk-in possible weekdays.

Inner west

Camperdown Memorial Rest Park

Free synthetic courts in the heart of Newtown. Two courts, no booking, can get very busy. Lights but the keys are only available to local residents via the council. Best for off-peak hits.

Cintra Park (Concord)

Six courts, mix of hard and synthetic, run by Canada Bay Council. Around $20 to $25 per hour, online booking. Lit at night. One of the cleanest and best-maintained council-run facilities in inner Sydney.

King George Park (Rozelle)

Two synthetic courts at a park location. Council-run. Booking via the Inner West Council portal. $15 to $20 per hour. Good location for inner-west players without a car.

North shore

Mosman Tennis Centre (Mosman)

Beautiful clubhouse facility with multiple courts. Bookings via the centre, around $30 per hour. Synthetic grass mostly. Coaches available. A North Shore institution.

Lane Cove Tennis (Lane Cove North)

Six courts, hard court. Council-run, bookable online. $18 to $25 per hour. Floodlit. A favourite of professional players who live on the north shore for casual hits.

Killara Park

Three free public courts on the north shore. No booking, daylight only. Best as a backup if you cannot get a paid court at short notice.

Northern beaches

Manly Tennis Centre

Synthetic grass and hard courts. Bookable online. Around $25 to $35 per hour. Coaches and pro shop. Stunning location 10 minutes walk from the beach. Very popular, book early.

Curl Curl Tennis Courts

Free public courts run by Northern Beaches Council. Two hard courts. Walk-in. Beach proximity makes the setting unbeatable for a casual weekday hit.

South Sydney

Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre (Homebush)

The big one. Where the Sydney International is played in January. Public bookings available outside tournament season. Around $35 to $60 per hour depending on the court. Multiple surfaces. Worth the trek once for the experience of hitting on a Davis Cup court.

Hurstville Tennis Centre

Eight courts run by Georges River Council. Synthetic surface. $20 to $30 per hour. Booking online. Friendly local feel, popular with adult social groups.

Western Sydney

Parramatta Tennis Centre

Twelve courts at Parramatta Park. Bookable online. $20 to $35 per hour. Floodlit. Good central western Sydney option.

Penrith RSL Tennis Club

Member-friendly club that also takes casual bookings. Six courts. $20 to $30 per hour.

Liverpool Tennis Centre

Public-access centre with eight courts. Bookable online. $18 to $25 per hour. Less crowded than the inner Sydney centres.

How to find more

The full list of Sydney council tennis facilities is in RallyHub's NSW tennis clubs directory, which lists every active club we know about across the state by suburb. Around 60 of the listings are Sydney metro.

For free council courts specifically, search the website of your local council under "tennis", "sport and recreation", or "facilities". Most metro Sydney councils run at least 2 to 4 free or low-cost courts.

Booking and access tips

  • Most public courts use the BookATime, ClubSpark, or HotShots portals. If you have an account on one, the others use similar interfaces.
  • Peak times are 5pm-9pm weekdays and 8am-12pm weekends. Book a week ahead for those.
  • Off-peak rates apply at most centres for weekday daytimes. Often 30 to 50% cheaper.
  • Free courts have no time limits in theory but local etiquette is 60 to 90 minutes when others are waiting.
  • Bring a backup plan. Outdoor courts close in heavy rain. Have one alternative indoor or close-by court in mind.

The honest summary

For paid play in Sydney, Heffron Park (east), Lane Cove (north), Cintra Park (inner west), and Parramatta (west) are the four facilities most worth knowing about. All four are well-maintained, fairly priced, bookable online, and accommodate adult social play well.

For free play, Trumper Park, Camperdown Memorial, Curl Curl, and Killara Park give you decent coverage across Sydney's geography. They will not be empty but they will not cost you anything.
